Q3: How does sound contribute to the atmosphere created in the opening scene

At the start of the scene there was a very clever use of silence when the man was lighting the cigarette This was very effective as this made the audience think this functions as a enigma code. Where is this man? and Why was it very quiet? In this scene the sound used was diegetic and they was an element of non-diegetic. The difference between diegetic and non diegetic is that  diegetic is coming from the scene of coming from someone in the scene. Non- diegetic is sound which is not coming from the scene-it's added on. The the high pitch soundtrack was added to this scene whilst editing- this soundtrack was very spooky and it was very high pitch and it was going with the fire so this was a use of parallel sound as we associate this sound with what's happening in the scene. This soundtrack was creating a very scary atmosphere and a very trapped atmosphere because the fire was just in the boat and was going nowhere- this lead to a massive explosion, the explosion noise was parallel sound. Secondly their was uses of diegetic sound as some sounds were coming from the scene. The sounds that were coming from the scene was the fire and this sound was not added on whilst editing. Also the sound of the fire showed this was a very dangerous environment.

Thought this scene the sound was keep on speeding up- this was building up tension. With the fire the pitch of the sound was keep on getting higher and higher- the sound was getting higher when we see the fire travelling on the line- The sound was very loud and disturbing and it engages the audience. The clever thing the the direct did with the sound was that when the fire was getting more hotter- the pitch of the sound was getting louder. When the pitch of the sound was getting higher this was creating suspense as the audience wanted to know where is this fire going. Overall the sound was used very well and the uses where very clever and it when well with whole scene.

Preliminary exercise Evaluation

Self evaluation

The narrative is that the central protagonist (Alieu) delivers drugs to the 'villain' The villain creates an complication within the narrative- when watching this the audience think that this is a very straight forward story, which is the man delivers the 'food' and the other man gets his money. With this we developed the prop character theory- we learnt that the who receives the 'food' is the villain as he creates the complication, by not giving the money. Which is stealing. The hero (who's 'food' gets stolen) reacts as he doesn't receive his money.

WWW:
In the end our work had 18 shots and the shot tracker helped us produce this work and we did the shot tracker very well and the tracker was very detailed.  The tracker is very vital as it shows the time of the shots and it helps us remember how long the shot is going to be and it tells us what to do in every shot.  We did the establishing shot very well as it shows the surroundings and it shows who is the main character. The establishing shot is very vital as it determines if the audience is going to watch it as the establishing shot shows: the setting and the character.  In this video we didn't break the Match on match action rule. We didn't break the 180 degree rule as throughout the whole video  the two characters didn't step out of the line whist talking. We used the shot reverse shot when the dialogue was happening between the two people. The rules weren't broken. We used a variety of shots in the whole play. The close up of Alieu opening the door was a fabulous shot and it was clever use of the camera.

EBI:
When we do the final thing, we need to spend more time on editing as the editing wasn't great as we didn't spend much time on it and when we do the final thing we need to make sure we spend high amounts of time on the editing. Our shots were out of focus as we left it on auto focus, next time we need to make sure the camera is in focus and we need to check the camera before we start filming.  The sound of the characters wasn't very clear as we didn't use mic's and the characters weren't speaking loud enough.

What we learnt is that we have to spend more time planning video work as it is very difficult and everyone has to be 100 per cent committed. We need to spend more time editing and going through all the shots. We need to think about the setting and the setting surroundings- does it match the genre?

Strengths:
Used the match on action rule (Shot reverse shot and 180 degree rule)
Used a good range of shots- Close ups, over the shoulder shot
Simple and understanding storyline
Realistic characters

Weaknesses
Slightly rushed
Camera wasn't used well (auto focus left on)
Spent less time on editing (rushed)
