Section B

The industry that we studied was the film industry. The two films I am looking as part of my case study are ill manors, A field in England and Wolf of wall street. Wolf of wall street is a Hollywood movie which contains Leonardo DiCaprio, whereas ill manors is a low budget U.K movie by Ben Drew (plan b) containing Riz Ahmed. A field in England is art house movie produced in the U.K.

Wolf of wall street does you E- media to promote the movie, but the content on the official website isn't anything user generated and doesn't involve the consumers in anyway as is all produced by the production company and nothing user generated. What we do see on the official website on the main page is the DVD being promoted and they need consumers to buy the DVD to make a profit so they advertise it on the main page. One thing on the website is user generated which is 'Make a GIF' and this is where you start and stop the trailer from anywhere and add text once you make the GIF you could share it on social networks or you could download it. This is user generated because the audience make it themselves.

The use of E- media is very important to ill manors the importance to their construction.  As ill manors don't have a big budget they heavily rely on e media to promote the movie as it's free and very effective as many people use social networks.  The way ill manors use user- generated content is very unique in way that they rely on twitter users to make the starter work.  They needed tweets from people to make this work as they projected tweets all over London to promote the movie.  This could possibly be done by print by people sending in their opinions - will people really want to do that? no. So E media is very important because is much quicker and very easy to use.  This is user generated because the text is produced by the audience and it wouldn't work without them.

The director of ill manors had to present a ted x lecture which was reached to class A and B  audiences.  The lecture was about the ideologies and what he intends with ill Manors.  Plan B's approach had to be different as he is a informal type a guy, but to a high grade audiences he had to be more formal.  The main topic in this ted x lecture was how the media create stereotypes towards younger people and how younger people are labelled with these names.  The aim of the lecture was to inform the audience about ill manors and how the movie breaks these stereotypes. This article was shown in moving image (you tube)  This ted x lecture could be presented in a different way which is print as it could have been in a newspaper or a magazine- but this one would be in the likes of: Guardian or telegraph as it targeted at a higher class audience.

Branding is very important in the way it's consumed.  This is because of the low amount of moving image on ill manors products.  What the production company has done is that they kept the brand very consistent and we don't see it change on different platforms.  The typography is unchanged thought as it's kept the same and we see the same things.  This is effective as there isn't any moving image that keeps the consumers entertained so it's very important that they kept it consistent so the audience will recognize  the brand.  On the other hand A field in England release platform has left importance on in its consumption as all platforms were released on the same day. So the a individual platform has no importance as it's all out in one go.  You could watch the movie online so it makes it  easier for the audience to access it so the movie will have a wider reach as its free online.

Wednesday 23 April 2014

The trailer starts really fast with fast pace and this is one the most common trailer convention as we see it with Ill manors as well the trailer has fast pace and it tends to slow down as we get into the trailer.  The track in this trailer is parallel to what's happening in the trailer which is pretty messy and chaotic and the track represents what's happening in the trailer.  After we see a close up of Leonardo DiCaprio which shows that he is the main actor as the audience will want to know and people will be more interested as Leonardo is very popular and has a massive fan base and this is another important convention that they have imputed because more trailers do have shots of the main actors as it could determine if the neutrals watch the movie when it comes out.  Also we see other names the likes of Jonah Hill who are very popular in the industry and we don't see the unknown actors which is very understandable because these people aren't know well in the industry so it's very important that we see the names of the main starts because it could attract a wider range audience because these 2 men are very popular.

Both Jonah Hill and Leonardo DiCaprio did interviews for the Ellen show which is a family show where she interviews musicians, actors etc.  Leonardo DiCaprio talks about the movie and his style is more serious because he discusses the movie and that's really it. Also he talks about some of his older movies which a older audience will know about because they're aimed at a older age because most of his movies are a 16 or a 18.  With this is interview is about the movie because Ellen is talking about the movie and the performance of Leo which is promoting the movie because the people watching will want to see his performance. On the other hand Jonah Hill has the comedy aspect because younger audience will be familiar with him because he's been involved in movies which are targeted at a younger age: Superbad and 21 jump street so he adds some comedy as he's a funny man in the industry.  He talks about his desire to work with the director and many teenagers could relate to this because younger people might have desire to work with a upcoming director just like Jonah Hill did. The movie is being promoted as Ellen talks about his performance and how he suited the role.

Similarties between the three platforms

The main similarity between the three platforms is that they are trying to promote the movie  and they use each platforms to do so. They try send out a serious message about the importance of the story as on all platforms all we see is articles or interviews about the movie the characters don't really promote themselves because the movie is more important.  The three platforms have the intention which is promoting the movie and they promoted It very well because this is one of the best movies of 2014 and most viewed because the promotion section was very successful. This is because the actors weren't promoting themselves they were promoting the wolf of wall street brand and we don't see this in the modern day.

The difference was that each different platform had a different target audience. Different magazines had different target audience and different Interviews had a different target audience and the articles were focused on different topics because the target audience.  Broadcast is targeted at a wider range because the interviews were don't on mainstream networks which attracts more viewers as more people tend to watch TV and the interviews were on peak times and one of the most popular talk show in America which is Ellen and this is targeted at a wide range of people, whereas social network don't have a wide range of audience because younger people tend to use social networks as we could see by the twitter followers as it on has 30k followers because not many people use twitter and that's why we don't see heavy advertising on twitter because it's a wide range of people.  Individually social network is one of the most valuable because the actors have twitter and these actors have over a million followers and what I think that happens is that the industry want the actors to promote on their individual twitter accounts because they have massive fan base and that's why we see on their separate accounts they promote the movie, so people who don't know wolf of wall street but follow Jonah Hill will see the tweet about the movie and this could attract more people to watch it. But for wolf of wall street promoting on the twitter account isn't as affective as print or broadcast.

institutions use each platform to reach their target audience

Print Media
The institutions use different articles, magazines and different print adverts to promote the movie and with magazine this appeals to different people and it could gain a wider range audience. With print they inform people about the movie as they use different methods

Broadcast
The institution use trailers to reach to the target audience and the audience are main streamers who are likely to hear about the movie as the institution use promote on: sky, virgin and use BBC for interviews.

E- media
The biggest appeal is on E-media because majority of the people are on E media and this is how they could promote the movie as its free and effective. They use Facebook and twitter to promote the movie and they share shots from the movie regularly.

E media shots

How the characters represented

Print media
All the actors are represented in the same equal way and I think they have set out to just be themselves and just tell the truth. Jonah Hill done more interviews more than most of the cast as he is very popular and very funny so institutions want him to do interviews.  Jonah Hill is presented as the funny guy and he is like that in most movies and Leonardo is represented as the more serious actor and In the movie this is how it is. They both used American English as the pair are both American

Broadcast media
Yet again they are both presented as you will think humorous and both are very calm and very funny and this is why the movie is superb because the both actors match their role.  The thing I noticed that these 2 never done interviews together on the TV and on radio because you would expect the main actors to do interviews together and this wasn't the case with wolf of wall street. What I noticed with my research is that these 2 men both set out to entertain people and they do it very well.

 Emedia
Both of these actors have twitter accounts and they have over million followers each. But they don't regular tweet. The last time Jonah Hill tweeted was on the 10th April and he tweeted regularly before and he talks about random things just like the majority on twitter.  He promotes on his twitter account as he put a picture up when the movie came out and recently shared the trailer for 22 jump street. when he tweets we hear what we expect from Jonah Hill talking about random things which usually be about music or TV

Leonardo doesn't tweet at all the last time he tweeted was in March and when does tweet is about promoting something, I believe that he doesn't run his twitter account is run by his agents or the industry and they use his twitter account to promote as he has over a million followers.

Institutions involved

How does the industry promote the film using –

print

As Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill are the 2 main noticeable stars they had to do interviews in both America and England. They done interviews on different topics with different industries. These interviews are stickly about the movie as the industry need to promote the movie and its very easy doing it with major industries because these industries have many readers and this is why most interviews both these men are talking about the movie.  These interviews are with both magazines and newspapers.

In one interview Jonah hill talks about drugs and in one interview he talks about the money involved and how much he got paid to take part. In the guardian movie it more about the movie and more about behind the scenes and with the red-carpet the interview is more about himself as he talks about why he took the minimum acting wage to take part.

Broadcast
The industry have released some behind the scene footage and it will come out fully with the DVD in the summer The one which was released on YouTube was only 3 minutes and this where you could see the making of the scenes.  This feature is almost like a reward because the industry want reward the customers as they brought the tickets to watch the movie so they give it free when the DVD releases.

Jonah Hill and Leonardo Di Caprio featured on the Ellen show and this is where these 2 were talking about the movie, but with Jonah hill he was talking about his weight loss with Ellen, but Leonardo was just taking about the movie and the experience. Jonah Hill did 2 sets of interviews with Radio 1 and the first one was in the morning where is more serious and he has questions about the movie and he has to go more in depth. The other interview which was few weeks later it was in a more relaxed situation but he couldn't give much away because the movie wasn't out and what he does is plays games with the presenters as is more relaxed.

E media
On the Facebook page they aren't many interactions with the audience the only interaction that is on the Facebook wall is when the industry give a link where there want the audience to vote for Leonardo DiCaprio for a award, but on the Facebook page there isn't much interaction as they only upload shots from the movie which are captioned.

The social network is a very interesting aspect to this movie because they don't really ask for much and they don't really interact. They promote it very interestingly as daily they have shots from the movie which a captioned by a short sentence and this would want the audience to go watch the movie as they would want to know what is happening in the shot because they don't give much away.

How are texts in the three platforms constructed?

Print

One of the main Hollywood actor Jonah Hill did a interview with guardian where he is talking about snorting fake cocaine and this was done to the guardian newspaper. He done other interviews depending on what type of industry he's giving the interview to.  E.g. talking about his health and weight loss with men's health. Talking about the movie with Ontheredcarpet. One example was that he did a interview with the guardian and he talks about snorting fake cocaine. This interview has a basic start as it introduces the movie and Jonah hill and then he talks about the topic which was cocaine. Also in this interview he talks about his acting history and how he adores the director wolf of wall street, but the main topic was the cocaine issue as that will get viewers and sell newspapers. By using the Marin Scorsese name it could get more viewers as this man is hugely popular as he has produced many movies.

Broadcast

All the actors from wolf of wall street promoted themselves and the movie in many different ways as they all done interviews for radio and TV shows.  Jonah Hill done a interview for radio 1 where he talks about how it was working with Leonardo DiCaprio and talks more about the Movie.  This interview was done on the breakfast show and this is because this is when people adults go to work and they would learn more about the movie as radio 1 is a very popular show. The morning show always have different guests from movie stars to TV stars.  This is a very important part to the promotion because  this is where Jonah hill talks about the filming stage and gives a insight to the movie which people will want to hear about and it's very interesting because people will want to hear  how it is working with Leonardo DiCaprio because he is very interesting man.

E- Media
The wolf of wall street twitter page has over 30 thousand followers and the page has only sent out 276 tweets.  Many twitter pages have competitions where people could win items, Whereas the  twitter feed only has tweets about the actors if they have won a award and that's the only thing they tweet about.  They also retweet tweets from fans when they are tweeting a picture where they are about to watch the movie and daily they have pictures from the movie captioned.

The Facebook page has 1.2 million likes. The most interesting thing on the Facebook page was the Spotify playlist which has all the songs from he movie.  It's very similar to the twitter page as they just post daily pictures from the movie which are all captioned. They ask you to vote for the actors so they could win the award and dedicated fans will vote for the actors in the movie

Wolf of wall street case study

Who are the films target audience(s) and how do you know?
The Target audience for wall of wall street is 16 or upwards. Duo to the scenes included in the movie which aren't suitable for children. The scenes contain nudity, sex and drugs which aren't suitable for younger children.  The movie also have the use of swear words throughout the movie. The drug use in this movie is very high because is about stock breakers and bankers and these people use cocaine. By the watching the movie and researching it in depth I have the backing and understanding that this is the suitable target audience because younger people may not be able to understand the narrative.

The film is promoted to it's target audience through print by;
Firstly the two main actors: Leonardo diCaprio and Jonah Hill done interviews with different types of industries talking about different subjects. The industry they done interviews for were:  Ontheredcarpet, Guardian, Vulture, daily mail etc.  They were talking about different aspects of the movie e.g. Jonah Hill was talking about snorting fake cocaine. Jonah Hill also done a interview for MensHealth and this is where he talks about his weight loss and this magazine is targeted at  mid aged men this allows men to get into the movie and this attract more people to watch the movie, on the other hand Ontheredcarpet are targeted to men and women and these people will learn about the movie. No interviews were done for any industries just aimed at women this is because women don't prefer these types of movies which contains drugs and high amount of sex scenes. By doing interviews for different types of magazines this allows wolf of wall street will get different audiences men and female.

The film is promoted to it's target audience through Broadcast by:
This movie isn't out on DVD/Blue ray as it just came out in cinemas this movie is predicted to come out on DVD in the summer.

The soundtrack is available to download and buy from stores. The album contains different artists and aren't just done by the individual one. The album was composed by Theodore Shapiro and the record label behind it was virgin records. The album contains 16 tracks.

Jonah Hill done a interview with Radio 1 and this is where he speaks about the movie itself and talks about Leonardo DiCaprio and he does a interview with the Ellen show where he talks about most aspects. Leonardo DiCaprio talks to Ellen on the show as well and he talks about the movie.  By doing different interviews the movie will reach to different people which will lead to more people watching the movie.

A field in England

Now answer the following questions on your blog:
1. How was A Field In England’s release different to typical film releases                         This movie is different to other movies because everything was released at one time which was on the 5th July. On this day it came out on most platforms: cinema, DVD, TV and online. On the other hand other movies have gaps for when they release the movie    2. What are the advantages to releasing the film across all platforms on the same day?
The advantages of releasing of releasing the film across all platforms on the first day is that everybody will be able to watch it. This is because it will be on a free view on film 4 and you will be able to buy the DVD. This would lead to larger target audience as more people will be able to the see the movie as its free.
3. What are the disadvantages to this approach?
The disadvantages of this approach is that everything would be out on the same day and on other days people won't really care about this movie as everything would come out on one day and it will be forgotten about. Also it's on free view and people who are interested will probably watch it for free rather than paying for it at the cinemas.
4. What target audience would A Field In England be aimed at? Demographics and Psychographics
I think that this movie is aimed at white middle class who usually go out to theatres on Friday night with friends or with a partner. The movie is also aimed at older people who are interested it these times. I think the social class is above C2 anybody above C2 this is because these people have well paid jobs and could afford to go out and watch this movie.
5. Do you think all films in future will be released across all platforms simultaneously in future?
I think big budget movies will never come out on all platforms on one day. This is because on this day know body would pay for the movie because it will be on free view and people would opt for the free view as its free. These movie are about making money and if everything comes out on one day no money will be made. Also the movie comes out 6 months later and this is where more money will be made as people would want the TV

My Favourite thing about this article is the pink slip under the first page. This is because everything is summed up in one paragraph which is very clever.  In this article they talk about the production process and the movie budgeting this isn't very appealing but it is very important. this article has different images used and there about 3 images used. One image is people watching the movie in the theatre. The other images is from the movie itself. This article also contains reviews from different people and they are talking about the movie and how they fell about the movie. The reviews are coming from different people from different websites. Also this magazine has facts and statistics about distribution.

1. The ill manors page has 30,156 likes.
2. The cover photo promotes the DVD and it has poster of ill manors which says out now.
3.The first post that I have chosen from the Facebook page is the poster of the ILL Manors music video this is a good promotion of the film because it appeals to the fans of the music artist and then lets them know of his up coming film production this links to the target audience because his fan base is his solid followers and promotion for the film. The second post was the trailer and this promotes the movie as its about the movie and this is where the audience could see the trailer and this could determine if they watch it. The last post i chose was the one which promotes the movie and its a poster where it says you could buy the movie know which promotes the DVD section and it has a link where you could buy the movie.
5.There is a link to the Ill Manors music video, which is an example of synergy as it promotes the music video further, and it promotes Plan B’s music. This helps promote the film as people who like his music would then go on to liking his film and would end up watching it.
6. On this facebook page there are many ways there are cross promoting as they promote the DVD and the soundtrack album.

1. The Plan B youtube channels is where the audience could access the trailer and the soundtracks from the movie.

2. The plan b youtube channel promotes the music side of the movie as it provides you with links where you could buy the music from. So it promotes the music side of ill manors by providing links to buy the music. Secondly we could see the trailer in the trailer video it has links where you could buy the movie which is promoting the hard copy for the movie as it provides links where you could  buy the movie.

3. In the top right of the homepage there are links to the other social networking sites. This creates synergy as it allows audience members to easily jump between sites.

  4. Find three images on Instagram tagged with Ill Manors that relate to other texts you have studied across the three platforms (such as the music video, TEDx lecture or a print interview). Explain the synergy between the texts.
1.  On the Instagram page there are different types of banners that promote the movie which tell you the release date and the banners that were on the street was on the ill manors Instagram page.

2.  The first image the I picked promote the music side the way he promoted the album was he put a image up telling fans that the album is for sale and you could know go buy it. The second image was the image where he tells fans that he is having a Q and A and anyone could attend and this is promoting the film as he is telling audience when it is out. Lastly he puts up a image the day the movie came out. This promoted the film side as its a film poster.

3. The hashtag used across all the e media section was ill manors this is important because they want people to talk about the movie on social media and the hashtag makes something stand out as the hashtag separates the tweets.

4. On his Instagram page there is a image that comes directly from one of his music video. The second image was the image of him on the Q magazine and this is where he talks about politics and in the tedx lecture plan b was talking about politics.

The buy now link is promoting the movie as it's a link to Amazon to purchase the movie.  Behind the Characters we could see the film poster which is cross promoting. Exam Feedback

WWW: We are seeing improvement and you have used media theories and language. However, plenty still to work on

EBI: Written English is still an issue and grammar holds you back

Institution and representation are the two weaker questions and you confuse where reference should go. why are you talking about stereotypes in the audience question not representation.

Re-write Q1 and Q3

1) Media Institution

The clever thing that was done was the use of acting. It was very positive because we didn't see the family hurt and the way the family reacted when he was about to crash. It was very positive as they didn't give up as they went to help the dad. With the crash the no blood was used which is positive as we didn't see anyone hurt- which gets the message across being put your seatbelt on then you wont get hurt. This advert has a child which could reach to a wider range of people. Families with children and children themselves.  The idea is very unique and I haven't seen it before. The technique being a invincible car and the car has such a massive effect.

This was a very short advert which means you could share this advert online and people will watch it as the advert isn't very long. Sharing on twitter is very easy as you share the link and a hashtag could get more viewers as it goes on the feed.  The main thing is that you could share it for free and keep sharing it many times.

The one thing that the institution have done well is that message is being told very easily. Message being: if you have a seatbelt on you wont get hurt.  If the narrative is short then the audience will understand the message and remember the message which will lead to less road side accidents. Lastly the appeal the advert has as no dialogue is being used and people around the world will understand what is happening with the facial expressions.

3) Media representation

This family are presented as a very strong family as the two females are saving the father with their own hands. The reason why the family are strong is because there are saving the dad. Also he does be saved as he doesn't get injured and is safe.  The family look very caring and care about each other and could be a dominant reading for white families who are caring. Also this a positive stereotype.

The family look like mainstreamers as they are a family of 3- with a small daughter. This family look like watching the main TV shows every night e,g. talk shows and soap operas on Friday and saturday nights as a family.  We don't know the social class. The likelihood is that this family isn't D or E  as this family have a house that they live in. The house does look quite nice meaning that the parents have well paid jobs.

Find at least three different print examples (adverts, DVD packaging etc.) for Ill Manors. Post the images up on your blog and answer the following questions for each text:

  1. What are the key conventions that help you identify the print text?
  2. What design features help identify the Ill Manors brand?
  3. What examples of synergy can you find with the broadcast platform or other print examples
1. The tittle of the movie is in the middle so we could identify this is a poster as posters have tittles in the middle of the page. We could see the main character on the front.  On the bottom of the page we could see the production companies. Lastly all the reviews on the left and on the right. We cannot see all the reviews, but we could see the best rated reviews.

2.  The font style of the tittle as its the same on every platform.  The Estates behind Riz Ahmed as we see the same estates on the DVD cover. Lastly Plan B is always positioned on top of the Ill manors text.

3.  We could see Ben Drew's rap name which is Plan B which could promote his music as he is using his Rap name.

1.   Images of all the main actors from the movie. Bold text for the best rated review.  Name of the actors at the top of the page.

2.  The tittle helps identify the brand.

3.  The typography is used all over the media platforms. Most of these actors on the front have been in the music video.

1.   This looks like a poster which will be on a billboard as its quite long and high number of reviews. I could identity this by The strip on the bottom left which informs you when its out on DVD. The high amounts of reviews everywhere. The production companies. Lastly the main actor is on the poster.

2. The typography helps identify the brand- The tittle and font style.

3.  This promotes when the it will be out on DVD which is promoting the DVD side of this movie.

The demographics of Ill Manors music video I think is around group D / E as it appeals to more of the working class and people who live on estates, ones who can't afford a better life. The age group would obviously be for teenagers as it's about the riots that many teenagers caused. The video it self shows teenagers and younger, not grown up men or women. As it's many boys in the video, you would think it appeals more to men however, many girls would be attracted because there is some girls but also because some boys in the video are attractive thus, pulling a womanly audience; especially girls who like the "bad boy" look. This video appeals to a wider audience, ethnicity wise it appeals to both black and white people because the video contains both races however it doesn't have Asians, This movie could be for Indian/Asians as lots there is high majority of Indian/Asians in London who study with black and white people and they could relate these characters to their friends. The psychographics group that may watch this could be reformers. This is due tot he fact they are looking to change not only themselves but the society around them.when We first see the movie we believe that the target audience are just teenagers. The primary target audience are teenagers who are in the same situation.  Then we see a interesting piece from Edward saying that this movie isn't just for the people who are thugs- who took part in the riots. It's also aimed at the opposite meaning how these people are brought up and why they come into these situations which is absolutely true.  The pyschographic group could also be stragglers  as they could relate to the music video.

5) Who is the main distributor of Ill Manors?
The main distributor for this movie was Revolver entertainment, this company raised the most funds for the movie as they promoted the movie and put it in cinemas. The distribution rights were sold to revolver entertainment.
6) How was Ill Manors promoted using the broadcast platform?

The movie was promoted in a variety of way. He went on talk shows and singing the ill manors soundtracks on live lounge and the music being played on the radio. Also he had radio interviews where he talked about himself and the movie itself.  Lost my way soundtrack was play on bbc radio 1 in May 2012 year of the release.  Also he preformed at the BBC live lounge singing one of the ill manors track.  Lastly a album launch party took place where different musicians were invited- the party was private.

7) Compare this with a big budget blockbuster. What are the main similarities and differences?

The similarities with Ill manors and Sky fall is that both movies are British and the movies release dates were both in 2012.  Both the movies had London premiers.
Both of these movies have massive differences.  Sky fall is one the most anticipated movie world wide, whereas ill manors isn't a movie which attracts an world wide audience.  The figures for both movie where completely different budgets. Ill manors had a budget of £100,000. Box office was at 453,00. Skyfall's figures where completely different with a budget of $150 million with a massive box office at $1,108,561,013.  Also the actors from Skyfall had big pay cheques, whereas the actors from ill manors didn't get much as the movie didn't make that much money,so the actors didn't make much. Lastly the genre for ill manors is  crime drama, whereas skyfall is a crime fiction.

8) How does the trailer for Ill Manors hook audiences into the narrative and pose questions that the film will answer (Barthes: enigma codes)? Identify 3 ways/techniques. Use your notes on the trailer to help.

The fast pace engages the audience as its building up tension, within the trailer we see sneak peaks of the narrative.  With this trailer we see most of the main actors and we don't know who there are and what they have done which builds a enigma code as we want to know more about the actors and we want to know why the characters are in the position and in the movie we do see some of the characters history. We hear  Plan B rapping in the the trailer- but plan b is rapping. He's telling some of the story in that song but not the full story.  This creates a synergy as he's promoting the movie and his must at the same time.

9) How does the trailer for Ill Manors balance plot and spectacle?

When we see the trailer we understand the plot more as it has a song which explains whats happening, and we hear dialogue from the most important people who tell us more about the narrative. They talk about drugs and crack heads in the trailer, therefore we would be able to understand what happens in the movie.  We also see images of the location so we understand where the movie is.

10) Think about the certificate of Ill Manors (18 certificate). Research film certification and outline what is deemed acceptable for this certificate. What is the difference between a 15 certificate and an 18 certificate?
The BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) is the agency which classifies the certificate rating of films in britian, they rate all films and judge what certificate they should be by whether the content is suitable.
The BBFC rates films into the following categories: U PG 12 12A 15 18 R18.
15 rated certificate  allow moderate violence, gore and sexual activity, but not too frequent and must be relevant. Drug taking is not banned but should not be promoted.18:
18 rated certificates allow gore, violence, sexual activity and drug taking. again, not to be promoted.

'You will only die or go into jail'- The slogan of the new TV drama on E4 starting on the 11th march
Hi This is KSIOLAJIDEBT! and today we have something special for you, interviewing the main star from dilemma.

So how are you?
I'm fine- tired to much press work today
thank god you was last someone of the journalists irradiated me today

Thank you! Anyways....How was filming?
I loved every single minute of filming. Its not normal that is say that , but with dilemma it was a joy. It was absolutely fantastic- Working with Arvinder was a dream, he is a man with a fantastic work ethic and that is why this show will be success. He does everything himself- he wants to edit and do all the camera work.

What do you think of the drama's name?
I think its very effective but its very short. This is the fantastic thing about this show the title sums up all the story. It was very clever idea which i really like. Very clever!

Why did you want to be part of this very low budget project?
Arvinder Chana is my good friend- i've know him since i was 14. I like a big challenge and you get high amounts of credit when the challenge is done and you feel so relaxed and good about yourself because you wasn't in it for the money, you was in it because you wanted to be in it. i enjoyed every minute.

Is there any other reason why you wanted to be in 'dilemma'
When Arvinder told me about the idea I was very impressed. Almost like my situation when i was 16- obviously not involving drugs.  With my situation I had the choice to go to acting or sign a contract with the Brentford. I opted with acting because football is a hard business very hard to play at the top.  So.... the reason why I was in this production is because I could relate to it.

How was it like working with the other actors- Tristan Deane, Armond sukhpi
They both are fantastic individuals and work fantastic together- i love every single minute working with my two friends. We're from the same agency we've worked on projects before. It gave me the extra bit of confidence working with these 2 as I already know these 2. This lead to better performance on set. This was down to Arvinder he knows how to get the best out of me and this certainly did.  Loved working with these 2. They have very successful futures lined up.

You're an amazing actor! Whats next?
I need to take a break know- filming was very long days to shoot 1 scene. I need a rest and I will probably go on holiday, watch some football matches around the world. I will be back and hopefully be filming season 2 if this is successful. If i get offers from other TV shows its something i would accept in the future.

We all wish you a massive good luck!
Thanks it was a joy to be interviewed by you. I love your YouTube videos.

First Draft

Ill Manors Research.

Media Forms:

What techniques does the video use to establish the setting and engage the audience?

They use Mis-en-scene really well in this music video as the clothes that the actors where wearing represent gangs and violence in this country. When the audience first see the music video they will know that this movie is about violence, prostitution, riots etc. This is because of the way the people in the video are represented- represented like thugs. Throughout this music music video we see real life footage to make this movie more realistic and this could attract more people if the movie is more realistic.  London in the media is presented as one of the best places to live, as its the capital of England and its presented as a safe place to live no danger. Plan b wanted to show how life is in London for the less fortunate as these people don't get help and don't get any support. What Plan b wanted to show the audience is that with out help and support this is what it leads to- being a hood-rat causing violence. So he wanted to show the harsh reality that doesn't get noticed and doesn't get noticed. The question is why did these teenagers riot in 2011? I think Plan b explains it in the music video/the movie. These teenagers have nothing to do in the summer and they get zero support from the government. So when 1 person went looting, then the trend was building. What Plan B intended to do with this music video is that he wanted to make the society understand why people rioted in 2011 and how bad conditions are in parts of London. This could also engage to all the people who watched the Olympics as foreign people probably think the country doesn't have any violence as London was presented like there is  no trouble and everyone loves the government/country,However it isn't like that far from that.

Media Representations: How is gender/ethnicity/age represented in the video?
Age is represented in this video because when you're watching you only see teenagers and All the characters in this music video probably only have one parent and the parent may be likely to be on drugs, so they don't care about their children.  Young kids who are represented as gangsters/thugs ,whereas we don't see normal teenagers ,older aged pensioner or middle aged adults. This reinforces the dominant representation that all teenagers are trouble and cause problems. Then you see around two girls and the rest are boys which again reinforces the representations that the media create about teenage boys. The media over exaggerate which creates "moral panic" which basically means the society start to panic and fear the younger aged group and teenagers. Many of the teenagers are represented in hoodies whereas someone like David Cameron who is dressed in a suit and looks smart is a binary opposite of how different statuses and backgrounds are represented in society. All these people in this music video are seen as a threat in the society. When you see the them on the street, you're are likely to cross the road because you don't know what they are capable of, they could attack you or steal  something from you. This reinforces the The hypodermic needle theory because all this information is injected into their heads but the information isn't always right. In this music video we mainly see black people and this connotes the dominate representation  of black people, living in estates involved with drugs. These are the people that we see in the music video. Also the very interesting thing is that plan b challenges these stereotypes as we see white people causing havoc. This was a very good technique used by plan b.

Media Institutions: In what ways is the video typical of music videos and what values does it promote?
This video is typical for a music video as it has the fast cuts which make it more live and entertaining, quick editing which cuts from the riots to them and Plan B singing, the actual content of the video shows it's a music video with the people going crazy, fighting and the two young children dancing in the front, the main focus  is on Plan B, who is a rapper. Also, in the beginning of the video it has that parental logo which used for many music video and at the end it has the copy right and says warner music which again shows it's a typical music video. The video values promote Anti-government as it;s a protest song and they don't like David Cameron as shown in the video, support for the working class as many people who live in estates would be from the working class and lower, they have counter hegemonic ideas that basically mean they're against the rich and need more equality in society. I think all this negativity comes from the reaction towards what the media say about them because, like I mentioned above the media does over exaggerate which makes the teenagers angry because it's not all true.  The sayings/lyrics suggest that teenagers are always causing problems in the country and are always in the wrong. In these types of music videos the shots have to be at a high pace as it worsen the situations and makes it more serious as there is a lot to show. This music video creates the story line and with the edits from 2011 shows how realistic the movie is.  Also having a message in the music video.

Media Audiences: Who does this text/artist appeal to and why?
The demographics of Ill Manors music video I think is around group D / E as it appeals to more of the working class and people who live on estates, ones who can't afford a better life. The age group would obviously be for teenagers as it's about the riots that many teenagers caused. The video it self shows teenagers and younger, not grown up men or women. 3)What similarities and differences are there between the music video and the lecture in terms of promoting the film to the audience.

2).
In both video Ben Drew talks about about: chavs and youths. Who live in bad estates and in a bad environment. Ben Drew is showing the audience why these people are called chavs and how life really is for 'chavs'. Ben Drew is trying to get to the audience telling them how hard life is in 'chavs' situations and he's trying to tell the audience that these people are presented in a bad way in the media. Ben Drew is trying to tell these people that the word has been misunderstood and tell the audience why these people are in these situation and he believes that the word has been thrown around way to easily and people are labelled with this word easily. At the Tedx lecture he talks about the history of the movie and how he got the money to produce this movie and this could lead the audience to watch the movie as the budget was very low and it was very method on how he got the money. The main difference is that in the music video Ben Drew was informal- the way he communicates with the audience. In the music video we hear swear words, whereas in the tedx lecture we don't hear Ben Drew using bad language.

3) Research the Ill Manors track and soundtrack album - Record companies? Sales? Music reviewers' response?
The record label for this company is Atlantic and this album was recorded in the Sanctuary which is a studio in London. The length of the album is 46:11. The rating this album got from Digital spy was a 4 star and  5 star by Telegraph. Also this album got a rating of 4 from the guardian. The reviews for this Album are mixed by the people. Some people like this album, but some people do dislike this album.

Ben Drew used different Techniques to promote this album. He performed live and he went to talk shows to talk about the album and the movie. He performed at the BBC radio 1 live lounge which is a live session. he promotion was helped further as a free download of one of his songs was available for those who had signed up to the official mailing list. The album was then nominated for the 2012 Mercury Prize, becoming the first soundtrack album to be nominated. The album also came first in the UK albums chart of 2012, and was in the top 10 of Irish albums, and Australian albums.
